Tomorrow
I'll be unavailable during the day tomorrow, because I'm going to service with my car and then to the local GNU/Linux fair, LinuxExpo where OpenOffice.org has its booth.

Danish only build started (build-22)
I have just started Danish-only build (build-22) because of Danish dictionary update. GNU/Linux will be available in the morning (hopefully) and Windows build tomorrow evening.
This is especially for Danish users: several people asked me to provide localized Mac OS X builds too. I'd be happy, but we do not have Mac OS X system available. It'd be enough to provide system that has: huge disk space (approx 10GB free for work), responsive administrator and good connectivity. We can then start porting our build system to Mac OS X and then offer localized builds too.
Do you want to help us? Just mail me.

Cooperative Linux
Sometimes, you are simply impressed what people can do. If you'd like to be impressed once again, checkout Cooperative Linux. coLinux is a method for running GNU/Linux on Microsoft Windows natively.
I'd rather see users migrating from proprietary systems (like Microsoft Windows) to more open systems like GNU/Linux, but this project helps out people to at least try GNU/Linux and migrate task by task to it.

Localized build-21 available (based on RC3)
Build-21 is available. It contains Danish, Czech and Slovak updates and will be produced on all systems. This is final version of RC3 for Czech and Slovak versions that are to be released together with original English version.

PPC builds, kerning issues, ...
Petr prepared RC3 (still without Mozilla) builds for Linux running on PPC.
Localizations builds for Czech are almost ready, Slovak builds will be ready before Monday. The same applies for Danish.
Czech OpenOffice.org user (Juraj Václavík of UJP PRAHA, a.s.) reported, that pair kerning does not work in OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 RC3 Czech. I found out that TrueType kerning works properly, only Type 1 fonts are not correctly displayed with pair kerning (kerning is not applied at all). I put several screenshots at my site and also added them to #i23684#. Please vote for this issue.
There are several similar issues connected with pair kerning: #i17836# is for applying pair kerning in the Preview box, #i19380# for TeX's italic correction, pair kerning in PDF exported documents (#i22667#), pair kerning problems for different font colors (#i26519#) and enabling pair kerning by default (#i16874#).

Microsoft: OpenOffice 1.1 Competitive Guide SMB Segment
Microsoft Corp. published interesting document for their partners: OpenOffice 1.1 Competitive Guide SMB Segment. Its valuable reading for people who plan to migrate from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice.org.
Update: see Slashdot for more informations. -----March 24, 2004 9:56 PM
The worst thing...
The worst thing that could happen is when two people who are not able to cite properly start thread between them in the mailing list. This happened several days ago in marketing project's mailing list (where it is pretty common, BTW) but now we can see it in technical list too :-(
So please vote for #i26640# to get rid of this.

Minor issue found in Czech builds
Issue #i26802# filed by Czech OpenOffice.org user is now fixed - Czech translation of column x rows in Calc was incorrect. This issue was there for a really long time and is now finally fixed.

Full day of relaxing
I had wonderful day today. I worked for about 4 hours only, read/learned a lot (how to use automatic gear-box ;-) and also visited my dentist's for a regular visit.
Funny day.

Not that much work today...
I have started RC3 builds for Estonian with fix for #i26806#. This version will be also used for Danish and Welsh Windows builds, because there was an issue in user rights of GSI files on Windows machine.

EU wants BIG money from Microsoft
The news was released yesterday: European regulators plan to levy a record fine of more than $600 million against Microsoft as part of what is expected to be a strongly worded rebuke of the company's business practices.
Even Slashdot has the news now. The first reply there contains nice timeline ;-) -----

Lithuanian added to the list of languages (work in progress)
I have just added Lithuanian language to the list of supported languages and ask them to provide status report. Lithuanian Native-Lang project seems to be setup, but still empty though.

Preparation for 64bit01, RC3 issues in localized inst. sets
I have prepared our build system for work on the third tree - 64bit01 and checked it out to my system. During the checkout, I found that chart2 project was not tagged for that branch, thus I filed #i26772#.
We found several issues in localized builds of RC3 - Estonian version does not have QuickHelpTexts translated. There are 200+ occurrences of them in GSI file and their script to convert GSI to PO doesn't count with them, only with Text.
Second issue is more general: several languages have corrupted (mixed native language with English) README and README.html. This issue applies to both variant of Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese and also Dutch. Czech and Slovak versions should be up-to-date.

OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 RC3 for Czech, Slovak, ...
We have just released RC3 for Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Danish, Slovenian, Estonian, Welsh and South African languages. You can download RC3 from ftp.linux.cz.
I also did another batch of updates to the table of all supported languages (adding Vietnamese, ...).

Novell plans to release YaST under GNU GPL?
According to News.com, Novell plans to make YaST administration tool available under GNU GPL. Sources of that tool are already provided but under license that is restrictive.
Novell seems to grasp free software/Open Source principles very well. Good!

Child workspaces list available
Jörg Jahnke from Sun announced Environment Information System 2.0, system for tracking available workspaces in OpenOffice.org CVS. You can browse all available workspaces on master workspaces and do much more.
It is really valuable tool.

Novell Releases First Commercial Linux Featuring 2.6 Kernel
Novell corporation released press release about their upcoming GNU/Linux distribution based on the Linux kernel 2.6. If you like green more than red, you can read it also on suse.com ;-)
I'm still wondering why all Linux distributors hurry to adopt newer kernels...

Experiment with Google AdSense
I have just registered with Google AdSense to see how they deliver customized on-topic adverts to your website. So far it just works - mainly computer oriented ads. Yesterday, I have seen an ad from a company producing something like ccache for Microsoft's compiler ;-)
Update: Just after I posted this, Google feed me OpenOffice.org training advertisement.

GCC 3.0.4 issue with cws_src680_ooo20040329
We still use very old GCC to compile OpenOffice.org to get the most possible compatibility available. This caused me many headaches in the recent development branch, because of very weird implementation of template instantiation depth counting in C++.
ANSI/ISO C++ standard defines that conforming programs must not rely on template instantiation depth greater than 17 (see info gcc). Newer GCC versions in fact can compile the code (see #i26518# for more details) without problems. But the old version seems to count the depth in a different way or it parses the code in a different manner.
All in all, I have to upgrade the build system on GNU/Linux to newer version. We are now running on very old SuSE Linux (8.0) thus I will probably upgrade to 8.2 or maybe even to 9.0. For now, I will use this patch.

OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 codename poll
Daniel Carrera started Poll: OOo 1.1.1 Codename yesterday. I immediately voted myself and wrote to our users and developers mailing lists and went to the city for the day.
One of our oldest GNU/Linux server Root.cz collected the news (10:39) and added it to their news items and people started to vote. On the other hand, I do not believe people voted without cheating because right now, Prague has 873 votes, 7 times more then the second city. You can view the results on Daniel's site.

Our build system now supports GNU/Linux on PowerPC
Just a small announcement: the build system developed by Czech Native-Lang project supports GNU/Linux on PowerPC. Supporting code was provided by Petr Vaníček. The patch was surprisingly small (only adding PPC specific parts to GNU/Linux support)!
So the only thing to provide regular builds for this operating system and platform is to receive permanent access to such system with good Internet connectivity. Anyone able to provide such system?

OpenOffice.org's Printer Admin test page
For the first time, I tried to print test page using Printer Admin tool (spadmin
). What
a surprise, one hidden butterfly fly out of that page.
That page is almost completely localized (I printed it using Czech build) but several letters with diacritical marks were printed incorrectly. I filed #i26547# for it.

Testing T602Filter UNO component
As I wrote on March 10th, there is an UNO component implementing T602 file format import. I received another batch of sample files from one of my customers and did a lot of testing on those files. Several issues found, but I plan to do more extensive tests in the second half of this week.
In general: the filter does a really decent job. There are issues with formatting tables and minor adjustments of lines between cells etc.
Just a side note: OpenOffice.org's Czech spell checker works wonderfully on those documents. You just open it, see A LOT of red underlines in the text because writers are really bad in writing using Czech and they haven't used spellchecker when creating those documents. Just press the right button on such word and choose the correct wording and you are done.
