Builds of SRC680_m59

Build of milestone SRC680_m59 for GNU/Linux operating system is being uploaded to ftp.linux.cz now. I have just started build on Solaris/SPARC and Josef is now hacking on Windows builds.

This directory also contains: GSI files, POT files and PO files for various languages. Please have a look at them and test.

The phase of extracting these files from the sources is almost finished. I'll now concentrate on the "merge this all back" now. -----

Update: I have worked more on the mort and now am in the same state as before resync. I'll commit patches to CVS soon.

SRC680_m59 is ready

SRC680_m59 was announced by Hamburg RE. Integrated child workspaces are calc23, tune06, pj08, shellfix01, os40, dtransfix, cfgldapfix, smoketest1, dmake43, swqbugfixes07, dba17, scriptingf6 and dba16.

I'm now building with additional child workspaces integrated (withlang completely integrated, transex3 module from ivo05). -----

"Evil genius" made it again!

Fabrice Bellard (Joseph Stewart called him "evil genius") again made my day.

He created TCCBOOT: TinyCC Boot Loader. What is it? To make a simple demo, just fetch its demo ISO, burn it and see how TinyCC compiler compiles the Linux kernel and boots it.

Or you can run the complete process in Fabrice's qemu, of course. Just run qemu -cdrom tccboot.iso and watch kernel source files being compiled and finally small Linux system boot. -----

Linux (mostly) job portal in Czech Republic

prace.abclinuxu.cz is a new job portal for GNU/Linux oriented people here in Czech Republic. So if you are looking for a man or two who will work for you, do not hesitate to use it.

No, I'm not connected with them. No, I'm not listed there ;-) -----

RPM-in-the-shell-script mess resolved in my builds

I have modified (one hash in one file ;-) script for creating languagepacks and now my build-2 of SRC680_m58 contains only RPM packages of language packs for GNU/Linux operating systems.

Please test them. -----

Windows v Linux security: the real facts

Several days ago I reported about presentation from Microsoft people on Windows vs. Linux security at LinuxHall conference.

I value my time so I have decided it is not worth the effort to prepare a document about their FUD, but The Register did so ;-) Read the real facts. Thanks Nicholas! -----

TIP: How to get DT_SONAME from shared libraries

Why is libssl.so always linked with full number instead of simple .so.0?
pavel@linux:~> ldd `which wget`|grep libssl
        libssl.so.0.9.7 => /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 (0x40024000)
It is buggy, its SONAME is wrong:
$ objdump --private-headers /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7|grep SONAME
  SONAME libssl.so.0.9.7
It should be libssl.so.0 only. Now imagine what will happen if openssl upgrades its number from 0.9.7 to 0.9.8... -----

SRC680_m58 is ready

Milestone SRC680_m58 was announced. It integrated the following child workspaces: langsupporter, valgrind57, onewaydefault, dr26, vq03 and shellfix02.

My build on GNU/Linux is already finished. I found two build issues: #i36050# (scp2 needs ulfconf from setup_native module) and #i36045# (binfilter: missing dependency on so3). Build is now being mirrored to ftp.linux.cz

I'm somewhat disappointed seeing language packs produced as scripts with actual binary RPM packages attached to them:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 oo users 12622735 Oct 24 13:50 openoffice-cs-1.9.58-1.i586.sh
Have you ever seen shell script of 12MB? I expressed my doubts in #i34221#. -----

ooo64bit02 is now resynced to SRC680_m57

Jens-Heiner Rechtien from Sun did a lot of work on resyncing ooo64bit02 child workspace to newer milestone from SRC680 (m57). Thanks.

I have just started build on my system to get it to the same state as it was before.

Update: module nas can not be compiled because patch doesn't apply. Copy nas-1.6.patch from SRC680_m58.

Use module jvmfwk from m58 with this patch applied:

SRX645_m50 milestone

SRX645_m50 has been built by Hamburg RE. Child Workspaces integrated: sw7pp4d, obr02 and vclppbugs7. I have already found two build issues - #i35665# and #i35668#. Both are fixed in pj07 child workspace.

My builds are not yet finished though so I'll updated this entry soon.

Update: all builds are uploaded to ftp.linux.cz now. -----

Milestone SRC680_m57 is ready

Hamburg RE announced that milestone SRC680_m57 is ready. Integrated child workspaces: csvio, cfgcws01, unixtools01, sch04, sj09, macrouifix, calc22, pj06, colorsubtoolbar, tra2, sj11, vq02, vcl27, pj04, configure1.

My builds are already finished. My build system is slightly modified against the milestone, it includes patches for #i31784# and thus it is configured with --with-lang="en-US cs sk et sl hu da".

This means that I'm now uploading not only English and Czech version, but language packs for Danish, Estonian, Hungarian and Slovenian. But see #i35659#.

Please test and report results. Build is now being uploaded to ftp.linux.cz. -----

LinuxHall presentation

I was presenting the solution of Linux based terminals for Czech Post (~15000 clients) at LinuxHall conference, INVEX computer fair in Brno, CZ.

The most interesting (at least for me) was the presentation by two guys (very similar duo like "Bob and Tom" from TELE TELE show in one Czech TV) from local Microsoft offices. Their presentation started with the fact of comparison of security issues found in Windows 2000 operating system (without database servers, without mail clients, without firewalls, without antivirus etc. ie. completely unusable system) and complete distributions of GNU/Linux operating system (e.g. Debian GNU/Linux with about ~10 mail clients, several database servers etc. ie. completely usable system). Yes, comparing absolute values of issues in both entities, not relative values. And I bet they would count XP SP2 as one fix.

I think this is either: bad communication strategy (read: both presenters were very bad at Microsoft's "school") or the beginning of the end of Microsoft corporation. If lying (read: misrepresenting facts as they want to present them) even before very knowledgeable public is their tactics, they are on the way to loose their customers.

But to be fair, I have to say that I was pleased by the attitude of other Microsoft' employees. Some of them are pretty fair and open and this is what the open-source community values.

Update: and to be completely fair: one Microsoft employee even acknowledged that the presentation misrepresents facts. -----

SRC680_m56 released, builds

SRC680_m56 milestone is released (only mav09 child workspace integrated). My builds for GNU/Linux and Solaris/SPARC are finished. You can download them from ftp.linux.cz.

The packages there are native installers with Czech and Slovak language packs. Because of #i34658#, you can't (now) install two language packs simultaneously. So if you are going to test e.g. Slovak version, please remove Czech language pack before installation. -----

#i31784#: new schema for handling languages in configure

I did a prototype implementation of changes for handling languages in configure proposed in #i31784#.

There is a specification and patches for config_office and solenv modules.

I would be happy if you can test it. The change should be self-documented, because I also changed the help text in configure. -----
