Extending community build system: looking for Solaris/x86

I'd like to produce the same set of builds like Sun is providing so I'm looking for communicative administrator who can provide me with remote access to his Solaris/x86 machine that is fast enough to do clean build in less than two days and has Sun C/C++ 5.5 installed and with administrator willing to install additional software needed.

Thanks for your offers :-) -----

107 issues with target OpenOffice.org 2.0

There are still 107 issues with target 2.0.

To help us know the current status of the 2.0 release process, please change the status of your issue to STARTED if you already started to work on your issue. This helps up to recognize issues that are dead or are being worked on.

Please try to minimize the amount of issues with target 2.0 now. Thanks for your help!

Can we get below 100 at the end of this week? I think so, but can we also reach 90 issues? ;-) -----

Microsoft finally released 64bit operating systems

Microsoft Corp. has finally released operating systems with 64bit support (for both Intel Itanium aka EPIC and AMD64 or EM64T). More than two years after open source operating systems started to support them. This shows something...

Is proprietary development model able to follow the latest technologies at all? What do you think? -----

SRC680_m96 and filename.1 and symlinks...

Please test m96 thoroughly. It added a feature from #i46741# where some filenames as they were present in older milestones are now symlinks to filename.1 (compare e.g. RPM packages core03 and core03u - notice the letter "u" at the end). One example is the file images.zip:
oo@oo:/tmp/SRC680_m96/share/config> ls -l images.zip*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 oo       users          12 Apr 23 20:58 images.zip -> images.zip.1
-r--r--r-- 1 oo users 4178242 Apr 23 14:32 images.zip.1
oo@oo:/tmp/SRC680_m96/share/config>
But this makes images in help corrupted. And there can be other issues hidden here or there.

So: please test everything *very* carefully. -----

New features in my build system

Starting with SRC680_m96, I have added two new features to my build system:
  • I also save and upload error files from running localize, thus translators can check if their GSI files are OK. See the directory build on mirrors.
  • I again started to pack SDK.

Current status of OpenOffice.org 2.0 Czech

This blog entry (it is work in progress, I'll gather information from other team members as well) summarizes the current status of Czech OpenOffice.org 2.0.

Translations

We have an online translation statistics available at OpenOffice.org site.

UI is translated completely for a long time. Unfortunately there still are issues like moving files (like recent fpicker changes) that make it harder but we build every milestone with UI 100% translated. Our users are already working with latest milestones and we fix translation issues as they come. The feedback from our users is very good, the only problem is that they do not file issue after the issue is confirmed in our list and we have to pick all issues by hand and enter them in IZ.

76% of the helpcontent is translated as of now (8535 strings are not translated). We have a team of several translators working on the translation. We tried to contact translation agencies but the price offered was twice as high as we expected and the most expensive agency was about twice as expensive as the rest... So after discussions with our sponsors, we decided to stay with our current community based translation model. Our team is getting better and better :-)

Wizards are a real pain to translate because they are changed also in the English and there is no good way to see what has been changed in en-US so you can also apply it in cs. You have to translate them again. But we are on the good way, because we have them all translated. The only problem is that we have to check if we have the translation of the latest versions...

Code

Our team is working on builds for GNU/Linux, Windows and MacOS X and is also helping teams without build infrastructures to provide regular builds. We build all milestones for all operating systems for 21 languages (we also build de and en-US versions for crosschecking and we also use German version for reports so they get more attention from German developers ;-).

We still have to reinstall our new Solaris/SPARC build machine, but because it is too noisy, we are postponing it ;-)

I'm also working with several other teams to get their changes into the CVS, doing QA for them etc. This slows down our work somewhat but it is necessary to get these teams up to speed so they can work independently and efficiently.

Issues

Our current issues (minor) that affect our language in UI:
  • #i38421#: General Glossary: sorting naively?
  • #i42871#: "Installation Wizard" in English in localized language pack
  • #i47993#: extras: non-localizable strings "Site title" etc. in web wizard
  • #i42014#: calendar popup in agenda wizard ignores locales
Preparation of 2.0 release from marketing point of view

Waiting for the info from my colleagues. -----

Reading mailing lists

Michael Meeks today told me two things:
  • he want to be informed about our project
  • he is not willing to read our lists
Unbelievable, people like he are really successful in getting me annoyed (for a minute or so) :-) You did it again, Michael. -----

Deadline for merging translations into 2.0

Ivo Hinkelmann posted very important informations for translators/localizers. To sum up: the deadline for providing GSI / SDF files is 2005/05/20. Use the latest possible milestone to base your GSI on, because there still are changes in the source code. There is no need to file issues now, because you'll surely have newer GSI a week later. File the issue into component l10n few days before the deadline, assign to ihi (Ivo) and put a link to your compressed GSI file in it. Make sure that your GSI file is syntactically correct (use gsicheck -c -l "" myfile.sdf for checking).

If you need to merge any patches to the source code, please make sure that the author of the patch has signed JCA (see this page for details), file an issue to component l10n, subcomponent code, and assign to pjanik. The deadline for such patches is earlier - 2005/05/05. -----

Updating to SUSE Linux 9.3

I have upgraded my primary system to SUSE Linux 9.3. This time it was harder than ever ;-) I decided to change my desktop environment to GNOME. And I'm impressed. During last ~10 years, I created many habits that I simply have to customize the environment to fit them to be as effective as before. And GNOME helped me a lot (although there still are pieces that are sub-optimal).

The worst nightmare of the upgrade was to get my Emacs installation ready for all the work I do in it... But this is a long story (in short: Emacs' bytecomp miscompiled one .el file from bbdb). -----

OpenOffice.org 2.0 will be released tomorrow

We are in a hurry, because Community Council decided, that we are too slow in developing OpenOffice.org 2.0 and thus we will release current code as OpenOffice.org 2.0 tomorrow in the morning (you know, "tested on users"). This version will be available for IA64 architecture only, because this is the only architecture with its clear perspective. And finally, both users of this architecture promised to install it immediately after the release to test.

MacOS X users will have native version tomorrow afternoon, because we have to run s/.so/.dylib/ on our codebase and do full rebuild.

Other announcements are also awaited. Erwin Tenhumberg decided to step down from his position and accepted the same position in OpenWindows project (he is angry with his Office and wants new Windows). Martin Hollmichel is leaving development positions inside Sun and now attends 14 days quick manager's training in Redmond to come back as Sun StarOffice division manager. Omotu will be his successor.

Michael Meeks also decided to leave his company to create a blueship company called Repli To, Inc. and will specialize in providing customized e-mail clients. You will be missed, Michael!

Novell, Inc. also published correction press release of its SUSE Linux 9.3 press release. To sum up: "SUSE Linux 9.3 doesn't contain OpenOffice.org 2.0, it contains OpenOffice.org 3.0."

Too many changes today (Czech parliament is also having its April, 1st today :-(). -----
